Zoological Sketches

This beautiful first edition, folio lithograph is from Joseph Wolf’s Zoological Sketches. The work was completed by Joseph Smit after Joseph Wolf’s art. The work was made for the Zoological Society of London in London by Henry Graves & Company between 1856 and 1867.

Each lithograph is cut to the edge of the image and mounted on a card to imitate the look of a watercolor. The caption is printed in gilt below the iage as issued. There is a blind stamp in the upper margin of the plates that belongs to the Department of Science and Art, Victoria and Albert Museum which is mentioned in the subscribers list. The subscriberts list itself only notes 94 copies.

Wolf is considered on the of the best all-around animal painters that existed. This specific work was commissioned by the Council of the Zoological Society in 1852. It’s purpose was to provide a scientific and artistic record of the living form and expression of many rare species of animals.
