Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London

This lush botanical engraving is from Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London issued by the (Royal) Horticultural Society. It was the most important pomological and botanical journal in its time. The work was published in London by W. Bulmer & Co between 1812 and 1835.

Many important artists contributed to the work including W. Hooker, Mrs. Withers, J. Robertson, B. Cotton, and E. Smith. William Hooker is largely responsible for the fruit engravings. Blunt & Stearn described Hooker “as one of the greatest pomological artists of all time.” (The Art of Botanical Illustration, 1995, p.233)

This particular print is from a set subscribed to Sir Thomas Grey Cullum. He was a surgeon, botanist, antiquarian, and writer.
