The work was published in New York in 1836 by William Hall \u0026amp; Co.  The maps from the work were engraved by Thomas Illman and Edward Pillbrow.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDavid H. Burr (1803-1875) was one of the greatest early American mapmakers.  He was born in Connecticut and began his career leading road surveys in southern New York.  In 1829, he was responsible for revising Simeon De Witt's map of New York State from 1804. Mitchell moved to Philadelphia c1830 in the hopes to improve geography textbooks and American cartographical information. This is the first French but third edition of the work published in 1587 in Antwerp by Christophe Plantin.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThese maps have been described as \"the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century.\" (Van der Krogt) The beautiful maps feature Renaissance-style cartouches and decorative work including vessels, sea and mythological monsters, birds, medallions, et al. Noted art historian, James A. Welu, comments on \"their richness of ornamentation, [they are] a combination of science and art that has rarely been surpassed in the history of mapmaking... Ortelius's \u003cem\u003eTheatrum\u003c\/em\u003e is known for its numerous decorative cartouches, which undoubtedly added to the atlas's long popularity.\" (Art and Cartography, pp. 145-146)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eTheatrum Orbis Terrarum\u003c\/em\u003e is widely recognized as the first modern atlas which shaped the future of cartography throughout the 17th century. He was born in Antwerp, Belgium but traveled throughout Europe where he eventually met Mercator. Ortelius became one of the most important cartographers in history. His largest accomplishment was certainly his atlas entitled \u003cem\u003eTheatrum Orbis Terrarum\u003c\/em\u003e. This included maps from the likes of Hondius, Bleau, and Visscher.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“The De Wit composite or 'dual-purpose' atlas is an early example of an atlas planned at its outset to serve as a land and a sea atlas in one. Koeman lists these works according to the number of maps and by and large this progression gives a fair idea of their development and therefore dates, beginning in the early 1660s. But he acknowledges it is not accurate and often subject to revised opinion.
