Maps from this atlas were intended for commercial use by merchants, shipmasters, and pilots interested in coastal geography, especially regions where the Dutch of the time would have traded.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHendrick Doncker (1626-1699) was a Dutch cartographer, bookseller, publisher, and maker of navigational tools. His maps were widely copied. He was known to take old and inaccurate maps to improve and publish. His son, Hendrick Doncker II, was also a cartographer and engraver.
