This brilliant original watercolor is by George Varnier in his Album d’Oiseaux collection. He completed the watercolors in France around 1860. Each watercolor features a bird in a botanical setting. They are mounted on a grey card with an octagonal mat with gilt edges and an ink ruled border. The birds were done using bright color choices that weren’t true to nature and more closely mirror the mythological Phoenix or Firebirds rather than pheasants or jays. The stylized nature was drawn from Chinese art as well as influenced by French avant-garde artistry.
