1 Cent Life

This iconic art and poetry is from the publication 1 Cent Life. The work was a limited edition run of 2100, this being number 646. It was published in 1964 by E. W. Kornfeld in Bern, Switzerland. It was edited by the artist Sam Francis.

The work featured poems from the Chinese-American artist Walasse Ting. This poetry is alongside original lithographs after major artists of the Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Cobra art movements. Art included from artists including Andy Warhol, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel, Sam Francis, Robert Indiana, Asger Jorn, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Claes Oldenburg, Mel Ramos, Robert Rauschenberg, and Tom Wesselmann. The lithographs were completed and printed in Paris by Maurice Beaudet with the typography done by handset letterpress by George Girard. The work was dedicated to Detroit-based contemporary art collector Florence Barron. Barron commissioned Andy Warhol to produce his first self-portraits. It is also believed that she produced the funds to create this collection.

Walasse Ting (1929-2010) was a Chinese-American visual artist and poet. His name is also found in English translations as: Ding Xiongquan or Ting Hsiung-ch’uan. Ting created color-saturated paintings often based in Abstract Expressionism. 1 Cent Life was dreamed up by Walasse Ting alongside his friend and artist, Sam Francis. Ting wanted to combine international artists and their styles into one collective spirit of art and poetry.
