Collaborations: Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat – Catalog with 18 Offset Lithographs and 1 Screen Print

This scarce catalog is Collaborations: Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, 12 November 1988-21 January 1989. It was published to mark the occasion of their multi-gallery exhibition in London. The catalog was printed in London in 1988 by David Grob Limited, The Mayor Gallery, and Mayor Rowan Gallery.

It is a rare and important catalog with 1 screen print (metallic invitation / announcement card not bound) and 18 color offset lithographs (17 bound and cover lithograph). The graphics are collaborations of Andy Warhol and Jean Michael Basquiat combining their styles of pop and street art. There is also an essay by Keith Haring entitled “Painting the third mind” describing the conversational nature of the pair’s collaborations.

Warhol and Basquiat were introduced in 1982 by Swiss art dealer Bruno Bischofberger. They had a strong personal and professional relationship that continue until Warhol’s death in February of 1987. They had two very distinct styles that when paired made a remarkable visual. Basquiat used hand-made, graffiti style gestures. Warhol’s technique used mechanical method and ready-made iconography. Keith Haring described their work together as “… a physical conversation happening in paint instead of words. The sense of humor, the snide remarks, the profound realizations, the simple chit-chat all happened with paint and brushes… There was a sense that one was watching something being unveiled and discovered for the first time.”
