Sketches from the Washington Races in October 1840 by An Eye Witness

This fine suite of three originally hand-colored lithographs is C. N. Newdegate’s Sketches from the Washington Races in October 1840 by An Eye Witness. The work was published in London circa 1840. The lithographs are loose, as issued, and housed in original oatmeal printed paper folder in a black, fall-down-back box.

This was a rare suit of plates. Each plate features printed text below with explanatory rhymed quatrains. The images depict the course of a race run at Washington Race Course in Charleston, South Carolina in October of 1840. The Washington Race Course was the oldest race track in the world, having been established in 1735.
