Tortoises, Terrapins, and Turtles drawn from life

This rare, first edition lithograph is from James de Carle Sowerby & Edward Lear’s Tortoises, Terrapins, and Turtles drawn from life. The work was published in 1872 in London, Paris, & Frankfort by Henry Sotheran, Joseph Baer, & Co.

Sowerby was the original artist for this work, and Lear completed the lithography. Lear was one of the most celebrated artists and lithographers of his time. Thomas Bell supervised the plates and was the intended author, while John Edward Gray was ultimately responsible for the text.

Thomas Bell originally began this work as Monograph Testudinata in 1832 but he went bankrupt. Sowerby & Lear published this continuation of Bell’s work in 1872. The work is the most impressive collection of tortoise illustrations ever produced.
