This originally hand-colored engraving is from the large paper edition of George Edwards’s A Natural History of Uncommon Birds. The work was published in London in between 1802 and 1806 by Will. Gardiner and others. The paper is J. Whatman watermarked dated 1816-1824.
[The plates] appear as though they had been transferred from drawings or printed sheets, and not printed from copper plates All the plates are exceptionally finely colored and of softer finish than those of the original edition. (Zimmer)
George Edwards was an English draughtsman and proficient ornithologist. He worked as the Librarian to the Royal College of Physicians which eventually allowed him to pursue publishing his bird studies and drawings. Edward really drove the prominence of bird and animal illustration in his time and thus became known as ‘The Father of British Ornithology’.
