This folio, hand-colored lithograph is from Andre-Etienne de Ferussac and A. D’Orbigny’s Histoire naturelle des Céphalopodes Acétabulifères vivants et fossiles. The work was published in Paris by Lacour between 1835 and 1848. The work was published in 21 parts and these particular plates offered were published in 1834 and 1835 from the first 11 parts.
It is an exceedingly rare work. It was an impressive publication on cephalopods that introduced several new species. The plates were drawn by some of the best French artists of the period including J.G. Prêtre, A. Prévosts, Oudart and Werner. Ferussac began work on this in 1822, but he died while the work was in progress and was completed by Alcide dOrbigny.
