Sketches in Scinde

This scarce, folio lithograph is from Lieutenant William Edwards’s Sketches in Scinde. The work was published in London by Henry Graves in 1846. Each lithograph features original hand-coloring. The lithography was copleted by Charles Haghe and mounted to card as issued.

This was the only color plate book published concerning Scinde (Sindh, Pakistan). It was produced after the invasion and annexation of 1843 by the dedicatee, Sir Charles Napier. William Edwards served as a Lieutenant and Napier’s aide-de-camp. Edwards’s illustration serve as an important visual record of Scinde.

Provenance: The lithograph is from a presentation copy for Mrs. Robert Cornish. It is signed “Yours Napier” to the frontispiece, likely an inscription from Sir Charles Napier.
