The work is bound in quarter green leather with cloth boards, gold gilt designs and lettering. It includes a portrait of Commander Hudson and 3 full page engravings. It begins at chapter 9 detailing the Antarctic cruise, pages 281 to 365. Hill notes that Wilkes “sailed into the Antarctic Ocean and along the Antarctic Continent from 150° to 97° East, reporting land at a number of points in the region now known as Wilkesland…”
