Description of the work:

This American Revolution period map is entitled Carte de l’Amerique Sept. pour Servir a l’intelligence de la Guerre entre les Angolis et les Insurgents. It was published by Jean-Baptiste Jacques de Beaurain in Paris in 1777.

This map depicts the state of the Revolutionary War before French entry, but likely in anticipation of French entry into the war as it is dedicated to a M. Sartine, Minister of the French Navy, who was strongly pro-colonial. It includes a miniature of the New Jersey and New York area, where much of the fighting occurred in 1777.

Jean-Baptiste Jacques de Beaurain (1728 - 1785was a French geographer and military historian. He was the ‘Geographe du Roi’ of King Louis XVI much like his father, who was ‘Geographer du Roi’ to Louis XV. He was deeply involved in creating and disseminating maps to the French, when new maps of the United States were in high demand.
