Description of the work: This volume with 39 lithographs is Brabourne and Chubb's The Birds of South America [with] Illustrations of the Game Birds and Water Fowl of South America. The work was published in London by R. H. Porter, John Weldon, Taylor and Francis between 1913 and 1917.
The book is bound in modern red half morocco over cloth board with a raised, gilt-decorated spine. Volumes one and two are bound together. There are 38 hand-colored lithographs by Henrik Gronvold and one double-page color map. The two volumes were originally supposed to be 16, but were unfortunately halted due to the death of Brabourne during World War One.
Wyndham Brabourne (1885-1915) was a British baron and soldier. He was killed in action in France in World War One.
Charles Chubb (1851-1924) was a British Ornithologist. He was employed by the Zoological Department of the British Museum.
Henrik Gronveld (1858-1940) was a Danish naturalist. He was among the last natural history artists to use lithographs. He provided illustrations for George Shelley, W. L. Buller, and Henry Eliot Howard, among others.
