Description of the work:
This lovely, folio costume engraving is by Umberto Brunelleschi for Gerard d'Houville's Les Masques et les Personnages de la Comedie Italienne. The work was published in Paris in 1914 by Aux Bureaux du Journal des Dames et des Modes. This is from a limited publication of 415 on arches paper of which this example is from no. 274.
The engraving is on arches paper that was loose in portfolio with uncut edges. The engravings were completed by Reidel after the art work of Brunelleschi. The images depicted theatrical characters on imaginative stage sets including Harlequin, Scaramouche, and Pierrot.
Umberto Brunelleschi (1879–1949) was an Italian artist and stage designer. He was also well known for his work for La Guirlande, Gazette du Bon Ton, and Journal des Dames et des Modes.
