The work was published in Philadelphia in 1853 by Lippincott, Grambo.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe illustrations show Native American life and culture, specifically that of the Dakota Sioux. The scenes included dancing, burial, administering medicine, traveling, fishing, spearing muskrats, and dressing a buffalo skin.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"A beautiful book upon aboriginal manners and history, written by a lady and illustrated by her husband, both of whom were well fitted for the task by long residence among the Indians\" (Field 477).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe steel engravings were after original illustrations by Mary's husband, Captain Seth Eastman. They were engravings by C. Burt, J. Smillie, J.C. McRae, A. Jones, C. E. Wagstaff, \u0026amp; J. Andrews.
