Description of the work:
This lush fruit chromolithograph is Robert Hogg and Henry Graves Bull's The Herefordshire pomona, containing coloured figures and descriptions of the most esteemed kinds of apples and pears.. The work was published in Hereford and London by Jakeman, Carver and the Journal of Horticulture between 1876 and 1885.
7The illustrations are after W. G. Smith, Alice Ellis, and Edith E. Bull. They were printed by G. Severeyns. The text, when available, is included and includes detailed historical information.
Great Flower Books marks it as "one of the finest fruit books ever issued." The work was the result of meetings at the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club with the intent to "restore Herefordshire to its fruit-growing supremacy." (from the introduction) Bunyard states that the book is "valuable for its records of more modern fruits which are not elsewhere described." (Bunyard p. 435)
