Description of the work:
This book is a John Prideaux Selby’s German translation of William Jardine’s The Naturalist’s Library. The work is entitled Naturgeschitchte der Papageien or Natural History of Parrots. It was published in Pest (modern Budapest) in 1842 by a Mr. Hartleben and translated into German by Friedrich Treischke.
The volume is bound in contemporary green cloth with gold gilt lettering and details to spine. The book includes a portrait of Le Valliant in the front as well as a short biography. The subject matter includes parrots from various parts of the world in 30 originally hand-colored engravings..
Sir William Jardine (1800-1874) was a talented Scottish naturalist. Some of his original work is in the London Natural History Museum and the Royal Scottish Museum. Jardine contributed most of the text for his works.
