Description of the work: These four volumes are A. Thorburn's British Birds. This second edition was published between 1915 & 1916 by Longmans, Green and Co. in London. This set in quarto was published with 82 colored lithograph plates featuring 400 species of British birds. The volumes are bound in original publisher's cloth with gold gilt details, and the top of the pages are gilt as well.

Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) was a Scottish artist who specialized in wildlife painting. His work was often set in front of dramatic backgrounds and was widely reproduced. He was friends with and collaborated with J. G. Millais, another artist known for his work on birds.
