Description of the work: This fine map with original outline color is from Giovanni Maria Cassini's Nuovo Atlante Geografico Universale delineato sulle ultime osservazioni. It was published in Rome by Calcografia Camerale between 1792 and 1801.
The atlas was of particular note for its inclusion of maps on Hawaii (Sandwich Islands) and Alaska. It was one of the earliest atlases to include these maps, as well as several other Pacific island groups. Cassini's terrestrial globe map was based on Captain James Cook's voyages. His celestial globe was used in the research of John Flamsteed and Nicholas Louis de Lacaille.
Giovanni Maria Cassini (1745-1824) was an Italian mathematician, globe maker, geographer, and engraver. He was a disciple of Giovanni Battista Piranesi and contemporary of Giovanni Antonio Rizzi Zannoni.
